Nightmares
are dreams occurring during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep that bring out
feelings of strong, inescapable fear, terror, distress, or extreme anxiety,
usually awakening the sleeper. Dreamers awaken from nightmares because
of the extreme intensity of emotions experienced within it.
Although
new evidence does exists to support the idea that even the most unpleasant
of dreams do not necessarily awaken the sleeper, a nightmare is
still currently defined as a disturbing dream in which the unpleasant visual
imagery and/or emotions awaken the sleeper. A bad dream is a disturbing
dream, which, though being unpleasant, does not cause the dreamer to wake
up.
Several reports have also shown that although fear is the most common psychological emotion in disturbing dreams, these dreams can also contain a variety of other unpleasant emotions such as anger, sadness, and frustration
Early views on nightmares by Cayce and Jung centered on the idea that nightmares involved the visitations of monsters, demons, ghosts, or other evil spirits. It was believed for Centuries that those who experienced nightmares were cursed and doomed to experience a life of torture. "The belief in spirits literally took its origin in the Nightmare." (Jones, 1931) It was this misunderstanding which caused many who suffered from chronic nightmares to live in exile.

Age
Illness
Alcohol or excessive alcohol consumption
Caffeine or other stimulants
Eating just prior to going to bed, raises the body's
metabolism and brain activity. This can cause nightmares
to occur more often.

Nightmares along with other dreams are
healthy measures that our minds take in order to release stress, anxiety,
and fear. It is through nightmares that our subconscious and concious
minds communicate. There are three pure types of dreams, subjective,
physical and spiritual. They relate to the past, present and future. Many
researchers believe, that some nightmares possess an element of prophecy
and warning. Through good interpretation of these dreams the "dreamer"
has the power to achieve complete understanding.
Remember,
your mind creates these dreams and your mind also has the power to control
their conclusions.
